Three months after closing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, NYU Shanghai welcomed seniors, graduate students, faculty and staff back to campus on April 27, with the support of comprehensive health and safety measures and “mixed-mode” teaching to deliver classes both live and online.
Fifty years ago, 19-year-old Yu Lizhong embarked on a journey of over 2,500 kilometers to work on the Changshuihe farming commune in Heilongjiang Province. In summer 2019, we followed Yu and three dozen of his fellow “sent down youth” from Shanghai to Heilongjiang to revisit the place where they spent a decade of their lives.
